Coming Home.

From Iraq they travelled home on the SS Strathmore, a luxury liner which at that time was fitted out as a hospital ship. It was loaded with 5,500 people. She docked in Sicily for food en route and departed at 4am.

At 10am news was received that Sicily had been attacked and ships blown up in the harbour where the SS Strathmore had earlier moored.

She finally docked at Liverpool on 6th January 1944. On arrival, Stan says so many people rushed to the rails, the ship was in danger of tilting and an announcement asked everyone to stand back!

Stan has returned to Poland only once, since his arrival here over 60 years ago
