Work

This is me at work in the bookbinding job. It was my first job after leaving school. The company was James Burn & Co. Ltd in Dorset Road, Bognor Regis.

I worked there from 1963 to 1970. During this time I served an apprenticeship and attended Brighton College of Art, where I eventually obtained my City & Guilds qualification in Bookbinding.

This picture was taken at the factory sometime in the early sixties. The machine is a 'gluer' and the books go through, spine down and a coat of (you've guessed it, glue) is applied to the spine of the books.

When I left school I had no job and this was the first one offered to me. I never really had any great enthusiam for it. In 1971 I left the trade, never to return. In the summer of that year I joined BT and worked there for almost forty-two years, finally retiring in 2013.
